Padang Terap District( DAY 5 - Health Promotion Unit) )

DAY 5(4th February 2010)

Venue : Bilik Mesyuarat, Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah(PKD)Padang Terap

Our first briefing was about the activity done by the Health promotion unit which just start forming this year in Padang Terap. 5 main activity are Prostar, Doctor Muda, Combi, Health camp, Healthy living campaign. Prostar and Doctor muda aim mainly for adolescence problem. Combi mainly aimed to combat Dengue, Health camp usually done in the Klinik Desa for the village nearby. Health camp must have 4 element;Talk, Examination, Quiz, and exhibition. Healthy living campaign usually done for the governmental departments. it involve eating habits, No smoking campaign, handling stress, no alcohol, and the latest element is exercise! this year moto is "setiap langkah bawa faedah" mean every step you do count.

Objectives:

- Help the students to form healthy lifestyles
- To enhance the involvement of school teachers and other staffs to produce healthy lifestyles

Then we had a briefing on PROSTAR at 11am.The activity was facilitated by Encik. Azlan Hussein. PROSTAR runs under the guidance of the Ministry of Health Malaysia.Program Sihat Tanpa AIDS untuk Remaja

Objectives:

- To increase knowledge and awareness on healthy lifestyles
-To highlight the dangers of AIDS/HIV to teenagers.
-Instill a positive behavior in the teenagers to prevent HIV/AIDS.
-To encourage peer support.
-To encourage volunteerism among youths


Discussion :

• At the district level, PROSTAR comes under the Health Promotion Unit.
• Mr. Azlan bin Hussein, PPKP, is in charge of the program.
• There is one PROSTAR centre and 7 schools that are active in PROSTAR.
• They join hands with PBSM, PEMADAM, ADK and other Youth NGOs.

Activities:
• There are 6 activities that they run through Motivational Camps
1. Kem Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya (PRS)
2. Thi club chooses good students from all the schools and train them about HIV/AIDS.
3. Talks and exhibitions.
4. Community programs
5. Course for facilitators for those aged 18 and above (NGO)
6. PROSTAR DAY/ AIDS DAY

In a survey conducted among the youths in this district,20% of students found to be involved in smoking and drug abuse while the rest claimed that were forced to get involved.
